Work package 1
Project Coordination
The objective of this Work Package is Coordination and Management of the PICTO Research Project in order to ensure effective progress of the project and effective use of resources. This WP will be led by IMG PAN. Other WP leaders GIG and IMPERIAL are also allocated time to coordinate and manage their respective WPs.

Work package 2
MONITORING OF PRODUCTION PROCESS AND VENTILATION ENVIRONMENT AT LONGWALL FACES
The package aims at performing field experiments under the conditions reflected by the longwall face production environment of the mining areas of selected mines operated by the industrial partners: namely the coal mines of PGG in Poland, and the lignite mine in Velenje, Slovenia.

Work package 3
MONITORING AND ASSESSMENT OF SOURCES OF GAS EMISSION AT LONGWALL PANELS
Development of a borehole probe for the scanning of drainage boreholes and its use to characterise gas sources in complex lithologies.
Drainage borehole performance monitoring with flow and gas concentration sensors to establish gas emission patterns at gateroads.
Numerical modelling of longwall and LTCC mining layouts and gas flow patterns into drainage boreholes.
Integrated assessment and analysis of gas emissions and sensor location optimisation.

Work package 4
DEVELOPMENT OF REAL TIME MONITORING AND CONTROL SYSTEM WITH FAST REACTING SOFTWARE
Preparation and selection of real-time face and gas drainage monitoring data for analysis via processing, cleansing and data mining.
Building a database housing time-space dependent distribution of gas concentration and drainage rates in relation to production schedule and machine operation state.
Statistical analysis of data obtained from technological process monitoring systems to obtain specific time-space dependent characteristics of air velocity and gas concentration in the longwall district.
Development of calibrated Virtual Models of the Longwalls and multivariate simulations for the selected longwall districts.

Work package 5
DEVELOPMENT AND DEMONSTRATION OF THE PROTOTYPE MONITORING AND CONTROL SYSTEM
Identification of control objects by definition of input, output and interference variables.
Development of the prototype longwall production unit control algorithms and procedures pre-tested on Virtual Models of longwalls.
Integration, testing and validation of the production unit control algorithms at longwall equipment development workshops and test facilities,

Work package 6
DISSEMINATION – WORKSHOPS, TRANSFER OF PRACTICE TO INDUSTRY, SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS
The main objective of this Work Package is to compile and disseminate the PICTO project research findings, field practice and experience gained from the research outcomes. It is planned to organise a project Worksop to disseminate this knowledge to a wide audience within the European coal mining community.
As a second objective, and upon completion of all the project tasks, a project “lessons learnt and recommendations document” will also be compiled and issued to assist industrial stakeholders and the scientific community towards achieving the general objective of eliminating undesired excessive gas emissions and ignition risks in coal mines.
